With nothing but pride on the line and a visibly smaller-than-normal crowd on hand at the Wells Fargo Center, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Islanders 2-1 in their last home game of the 2013 season.
Ilya Bryzgalov got the start in net, and saved 21 out of the 22 shots he faced for his 19th win of the season. He wasn't tested often, but that's a testament to how well the team in front of him played in all three periods.
The Flyers scored first - a power play goal a few minutes into the game - and dominated play throughout the contest.
Naturally, it was Danny Briere who potted the game's first goal in what may have been his last home game as a member of the Flyers. Briere and his $6 million contract are likely to be amnestied after this season's end, and Briere won't be able to sign a contract with the Flyers for at least a season after that.
At this point in his career though, that doesn't seem like a likely scenario.
The Islanders tied it at one with a goal that was typical of your 2013 Flyers.
The defense was shaky in the zone, didn't make the play and allowed the other team to take control in the zone. However, it was a shot that could have been stopped by Bryzgalov, and it's a scenario that we've seen time and time again in this lockout-shortened season.
Things would get better, though, as defenseman Oliver Lauridsen ripped an absolute blast of a shot from the point with just about six and half minutes left in the third period.
The puck squirted out to him at the left point, and the left-handed shooting Lauridsen made sure it hit the back of the twine.
Fans watched as the team gathered at center ice for one last thank you to the faithful in black and orange, and Claude Giroux tossed his stick into the stands as some lucky fan was the recepient of a nice souvenir.
Or maybe he threw it in frustration that his last home game was meaningless, and the Flyers wouldn't be hosting any memorable playoff games at the Wells Fargo Center this spring.
