Final Score: 5-2 Flyers.
The Flyers theme, "From One Tough Team To Another" on Tuesday evening, paid tribute to last week's events in Boston. The Flyers 50/50 raffle, which exceeded over $85,000 ($85,595), was donated along with the auction money raised from the game-worn jerseys from Tuesday to onefundboston.org.
After a beautiful tribute on Tuesday to last week's events in Boston, which included members of the Philadelphia Fire and Police, a Boston tribute video and an always amazing performance of "God Bless America", the Flyers and Bruins were underway.
After just 1:40 into the game, Scott Hartnell scores his 8th goal of the season, unassisted, right past Bruins goaltender, Anton Khudobin.
As played continued, the Bruins showed that they were here to win by giving hard hits and an answered goal by Wade Redden, his 3rd of the season, assisted by Jaromir Jagr and Carl Soderberg, only 4:54 into the first period. Simmonds tried to swing it away, but was too late as it crossed the red line before he got it out of the net.
First period ended tied 1-1.
The second period had a slow start to it, but after a long 9:40, a fight broke loose between Flyers, Jay Rosehill and Bruins, Shawn Thornton. Thinking that Rosehill had no chance when he fell seconds after the fight began, he immediately got back up and threw a couple great punches eventually resulting in Thorton falling and refs getting involved.
Not long after that, Matt Read scored, assisted by Wayne Simmonds, which made the Flyers have a safe, but not too safe lead of 2-1 against the Bruins 11:24 into the second period.
Six seconds later, a bad attempt by Bruins captain to get it around the net, resulted in Oliver Lauridsen getting his first NHL goal of his career, unassisted making it a 3-1 game.
A couple stupid penalties by the Flyers later, the period ended 3-1 with Flyers.
On top, the Flyers head into the third period.
5:33 into the third, Claude Giroux made a beautiful pass to Jake Vorachek for the breakaway and scored making it an easy lead game of 4-1.
A frustrated Bruins team battles to come back and a little after eight minutes into the third, they did just that scoring on Steve Mason making the game 4-2.
Just 13 seconds after David Krejci's unassisted goal, Simon Gagne responds the way he should, with a goal. Gagne was assisted by Claude Giroux and Luke Schenn.
With yet another tribute to the city of Boston, the Philadelphia crowd sang the legendary song, Sweet Caroline to end the period and the game nicely.
Mason played a very nice game, blocking 39 of 41 shots and with a hurt defense, he owned it.
Flyers won 5-2.
Stars of the Game according to Randy Miller:
1. City of Boston
2. Boston First Responders
3. Boston Police
